Here we go
Through the door
Into the great unknown
Here we go
Twisted inside out
And shoved outside in
Here we go
I didn’t know
That this would be this hard
But here we go
Your smile is my place in this world
Here we go
Your guard drops
The worst you can say is no
If you say yes
The rain clouds clear away
If you say yes
Your smile keeps the storm at bay
But if you say no
The lighting crashes down
If you say no
The thunder breaks my crown
Here we go
You are the apple pie
To my ice cream
Here we go
You are the movies
To my popcorn
I didn’t know
What I wanted
When I came
But now I know
It’s you.
Here we go is a poem inspired by the Taylor Swift song “Place in this world.” Hardcore Taylor Swift fans would have noticed the subtle hints I placed through the poem. Some examples include the lines “I didn’t know what I wanted when I came, But now I know it’s you.” Which corresponds to the line “I don’t know what I want, so don’t ask me” and the line “Your smile is my place in this world” which includes the title of the song.
I first wrote this poem at Sierra Elman’s Tortured Poets workshop. It was a very pleasing experience. We analyzed the lyrics of several popular songs, such as "Champagne Problems" by Taylor Swift or "Skinny Dipping" by Sabrina Carpenter. Afterwards, we were given the chance to write a poem based on a song we enjoyed. If Sierra Elman ever hosts another workshop, I extremely recommend that you attend.

Note: Sierra Elman is the Burlingame Hillsborough Youth Poet Laureate and former Beyond the Box Learning student and current intern. Her popular articles about poetry and the positive use of AI can be found on Medium.com.
Her piece called "The Future of Poetry: Is AI Smarter Than an 8th Grader?" has been clapped 10,000+ times! There, she tests if teachers can detect whether an poem was written by a human or AI.
Sierra's next Tortured Poets Workshop will be at
Mountain View Library on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 2pm-3pm.
