(Continued from chapter 8)
I yowled at Murphy and Martin as Lawrence picked me up.
“Where is your single, deeply flawed brain cell! Cats look out for each other!!”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you feared cucumbers, doll face!” Murphy’s smooth, mocking voice didn’t contain a single hint of apology. I sweared under my breath as the boy pulled my tail.
“Mommy! Victoria!” Lawrence grabbed me by my leg and ran out of the room. I never signed up for this! Martin leaped along side me and jeered.
“Look who’s so preeety nooooowwwww!>:)”
“Shut up, stupid! Get me out of this idiotic mess!”
“Surely, little lady! Follow Me!:D” As if I could steer this chaotic boy!
Lawrence spun around a corner into a tall room. Victoria smiled and asked him what he wanted. “It doesn’t even have a collar! Can I keep it, oh please, Miss Victoria?” No collar? Was he blind? I reached to my neck, and felt that my collar was gone. It must have caught on one of the annoying heart shaped bushes outside my home.
“Need help? Over here, little miss!” Murphy’s voice! I leaped out of Lawrence’s arms and ran towards it.
“Kitty! Come back here!” Murphy was hidden in the shadows like when we first met. His fur was the color of darkness. However, my fur was blue. It reflected light in a beautiful way, but was far too glamorous for hiding. What I lack in stealth, I make up for in speed. I dashed after Murphy up the magnificent stairs. So. Many. STAIRS. Back home we only had one staircase, made from strong elegant tempered glass. The stairs in Lawrence’s house ended at a large balcony.
“Where to now, Murphy!?” I rapidly spun in circles. “Where do I go next?”
“Down.” WHAT??? Murphy looked dead serious as he raised a paw and pointed to the nearby apartments. “Land on one of the windowsills of the peasants.”
“You’re kidding me, right?”
“I’m not kidding you one bit.”
Murphy looked me in the eyes, dead serious.
“Just jump.”
I took a deep breath. I was doing this. My instincts called to me, calling me back to the door, but I ignored them. No more stalling, I was prepared. I reared back, sprang, and jumped… but only onto the railing. The world seemed to spin at this dizzying height. I could see the streets, lined with people who couldn’t care less. Foolish creatures. One day they will fear and worship me too.
“Go on, jump!” Murphy insisted, disturbing my brooding. “They will be here soon!”
I jumped.
My feet felt numb as I tumbled through the air, looking for a place to grasp onto. I whirled around, trying to see the apartments that Murphy had referred to. I sprawled my paws towards the windowsill and dug my claws in as far as felinely possible. I pulled myself up with all the strength I could muster. My claws, my paws, and my body all hurt. One nap wouldn’t hurt. Just as I closed my eyes for a catnap, I heard a whoosh. It sounded just like my servant Nicola’s portal! I was secretly thrilled to hear it. But this woman who stepped out of the closing portal was NOT Nicola.
